A savory pie with minimal preparation. While we do make pie crust from scratch often, we thought we would share the simple version for you, with a purchased pie crust. My wife prefers the rolled dough crust in the refrigerated section, so she can roll out and shape the edges herself.
Ingredients:
- 1 store-bought pie crust
- 1/2 cup heavy cream
- 1/2 cup milk
- 3 eggs
- 1/2 cup grated Gruyère cheese
- 4 oz (115g) diced bacon or ham
- Salt, pepper, and nutmeg to taste
Instructions:
- Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
- Line a pie dish with the crust and bake for 10 minutes.
- Mix cream, milk, eggs, and seasonings. Sprinkle bacon and cheese on the crust.
- Pour the egg mixture over and bake for 30–35 minutes until set.
Let cool and serve at room temperature. Sometimes (while not traditional) she has added mushrooms, sundried tomatoes, potatoes, spinach, and other additions to the quiche – depending on what we have and are in the mood for. All are welcome, but tradition is the simple version, allowing the cheese, nutmeg, and ham to stand on their own.
Special notes are to not skimp on using real Gruyère cheese. There is nothing like the flavour and it pairs intentionally well with the nutmeg.
Enjoy!
